Why Minecraft is different from a generic VPS workload
Minecraft runs its world simulation on a single tick loop, 20 times per second. Every block update, entity movement and redstone circuit has to finish inside that 50ms window or the whole server lags, no matter how many CPU cores are idle. That is why a fast 4-core server consistently outperforms a slower 8-core one for vanilla and Paper worlds.
Memory works differently too. A web app can page cold data to disk without anyone noticing. Minecraft keeps the entire loaded world, every entity and every plugin's state in RAM continuously. Run out, and the server does not slow down gracefully, it freezes or crashes.
Vanilla vs Paper/Purpur vs Forge/Fabric
Paper and Purpur are drop-in replacements for vanilla that optimize the tick loop and support plugins, at roughly the same RAM cost as vanilla. They are the right default for a survival or plugin-based server. Forge and Fabric (modded) are a different story: mods add persistent RAM overhead per mod, and heavier packs like All the Mods or Create can need two to four times the RAM of an equivalent vanilla server for the same player count.
RAM and CPU by player count
- 1 to 5 players, survival with friends: 2 cores, 2 to 4 GB RAM.
- 5 to 15 players, light plugins: 4 cores, 6 to 8 GB RAM.
- 15 to 40 players with plugins (economy, land claims, custom items): 6+ cores, 10 to 16 GB RAM.
- 40 to 100+ players, or a heavy modpack: 8+ cores, 24 to 64 GB RAM.

Why storage speed matters more than most guides admit
Minecraft autosaves the world on a timer and writes a new region file every time a chunk changes. On HDD or even SATA SSD, a large survival world can stall the whole server for several seconds during a save, players report a visible freeze. On NVMe storage the same save completes in a fraction of a second, because random small-file writes are exactly what NVMe is built for.
Common sizing mistakes
- Buying a large-RAM plan on day one instead of upgrading when you actually hit a limit.
- Chasing core count over per-core clock speed, world ticking barely uses more than one or two cores well.
- Underestimating modpacks, ATM10 or Create-based packs commonly need 8 to 12 GB for 4 to 6 players alone.
- Treating backups and DDoS protection as optional because "it is just a server for friends".
DDoS protection is not a nice-to-have
Public Minecraft servers get attacked more often than people expect, often by a bored player who lost a PvP fight rather than a serious adversary. Always-on network-level filtering stops the flood before it reaches your server; anything that "activates after detection" is already too slow to save a live match.
Quick answer: which plan should you actually buy
Starting a new server for a handful of friends, the free Bee tier or Spider plan covers it. Running a public plugin server with 20 to 40 regulars, aim for Creeper to Pigman. Only reach for Blaze and above once you are actually running a heavy modpack or hosting 60+ concurrent players, not before.
Size for the players you have this week, not the server you imagine having in six months. Upgrading a Minecraft plan takes minutes; overpaying for idle RAM for months does not refund itself.
